Drone-generated 3D surface model of a sand quarry

In mines and quarries, surveying is both a legal duty and part of running the operation. Production inside the licence area, new benches and stockpiles all need to be documented. A drone survey captures the whole pit in a few hours, from a safe distance and without anyone walking the benches.

By comparing surface models from two dates we calculate cut and fill volumes and report each stockpile separately. Maps and reports are prepared in the format required by MAPEG, the Turkish mining authority, and aligned with the licence coordinates.

How we work

  1. Licence and boundary. Licence coordinates and the previous period’s survey are collected.
  2. Fieldwork. Ground control is set out and the drone is flown; GNSS fills in where needed.
  3. Surface model. The pit surface, benches and stockpile areas are modelled.
  4. Volumes. Cut, fill and stockpile volumes are computed against the previous survey.
  5. Report. The map, sections and volume report are delivered.

Typical uses

  • Periodic surveys submitted to MAPEG
  • Production tracking in sand, gravel and stone quarries
  • Stockpile inventories
  • Rehabilitation and bench planning
